They’re aren't many places you can get married in Pittsburgh where the entire city becomes part of your wedding day. But, Gateway Clipper is one of them.

Alex and April's wedding was a beautiful summer celebration that started high above the city on Mount Washington and ended with an evening of dancing on the river. Between the Pittsburgh skyline, the views from the boat, and a ceremony literally surrounded by water and city lights, this was about as Pittsburgh as a wedding can get. A Mount Washington First Look Before heading to the Gateway Clipper, Alex and April had their first look at the Mount Washington overlook. And if you're going to have a first look in Pittsburgh, you might as well have the skyline behind you. The weather was absolutely perfect, which gave us plenty of time to take advantage of the view and get some portraits before heading down to the boat. April looked incredible in her wedding dress, Alex couldn't stop smiling, and the whole thing had that feeling you want on a wedding day: excitement without the frantic energy. They were getting married. And they knew it.

Then we headed to the Gateway Clipper. One of the coolest things about a Gateway Clipper wedding is that the venue actually moves. You're not just getting married near Pittsburgh. You're getting married while cruising through it. The boat gave everyone plenty of time to relax, listen to music, enjoy the views, and take in the fact that the entire Pittsburgh skyline was changing around them as we moved along the rivers. For a wedding photographer, it also means the scenery is constantly changing. Which I am absolutely not complaining about.

Getting Married With Pittsburgh as the Backdrop

Alex and April's ceremony took place on the upper deck of the Gateway Clipper. The city was spread out behind them, with the rivers and Point State Park in the distance. It's hard to come up with a more Pittsburgh setting for a wedding ceremony. They exchanged vows surrounded by their closest friends and family, with the skyline behind them and the river stretching out in every direction. And then they were married. Pretty damn good backdrop for a first kiss.

This is exactly the kind of wedding day where I don't want to over-direct anything. The setting already gives us so much. I'll absolutely help when you need it. We'll make sure we get the important portraits, family photographs, and all the pieces of the day that you'll want to remember. But once we've done that? Go enjoy your wedding. I want to photograph the moments that happen when you're not thinking about the camera. The way you look at each other when nobody is telling you where to stand. Your friends laughing at the table. Your family watching the ceremony. The ridiculous dance moves that inevitably show up later. That's the stuff that makes a wedding gallery feel like your wedding, instead of a collection of technically perfect photographs.

Pittsburgh Skyline Wedding Portraits

One of my favorite things about a Gateway Clipper wedding is that Pittsburgh is basically built into the experience. The rivers, bridges, skyline, and city architecture all become part of the photographs. And because the boat keeps moving, the backdrop keeps changing. You get the city from different angles throughout the day instead of standing in one spot and taking the same photograph 47 times. Which works pretty well for me, because I'm much more interested in making photographs that feel different from each other.

Dinner, Dancing & Pittsburgh at Night

As the sun went down, the city started lighting up around us. The reception moved into full celebration mode, with dinner, dancing, music, and everyone settling into the part of the evening where the formalities are over and people can just enjoy themselves. And honestly, that's usually when weddings get good. Everyone has eaten. The speeches are done. The couple has finally relaxed. And the dance floor starts getting increasingly questionable.

Perfect. Those are the photographs I want. The ones where your friends aren't thinking about whether they look good. The ones where your parents are laughing. The ones where somebody is dancing like nobody is watching—even though I absolutely am. Because years from now, those photographs are going to take you right back to the night.
